New Priorties for Post War America
When World War II ended, the manufacturers wasted little time in pulling out their tooling from storage and began cranking up their assembly lines. But during those war years, very little could be done to develop new cars. The 1946- '47, and '48 models would look like 1942 all over again.
Still, there were several significant changes in 1941 that would serve the automakers well in this transition period. At General Motors, fastback styling was introduced across the range (although Chevrolet wouldn't get the design until 1942), which gave the cars a sleeker, more modern look. Buick in particular introduced a new fender treatment called the "airfoil" on the Super model. The fender swept back and down through the door, ending low in front of the rear wheel arch. In later styling this look, when coupled to the line running over the rear wheel arch, would become known as a "sweep spear."
Oldsmobile was the first division to show 1946 models when in early 1945 workers hand-assembled several cars, which were displayed around the country to whet the appetite of buyers who hadn't seen a new car in three years. It would be until October that most GM divisions had their assembly lines back in production.
Both Chrysler and Buick introduced wood-sided station wagons in 1941, and the Buick returned in 1946 joined by Chevrolet. Chrysler dropped its wagon and continued with wood-bodied Town & Country sedans and convertibles. Ford also embraced the woodies with the Sportsman series of 2-door convertibles sold through Ford and Mercury divisions. The irony is that a little more than a decade after the industry finally advanced to all-steel body construction, wood would return as a styling element. Unfortunately, woodies didn't sell in any great volumes since the upkeep was difficult and expensive.
Packard, having sold the tooling for the 180 to the Soviets during the war; resumed production with its Clipper, a mid-market sedan offered with a base model six and three straight eights.
Though basically a prewar design, the Clipper had bold grille and smoothly contoured body that didn't seem as dated as some of the other reconstituted offerings by Detroit. Offered on either 120 or 127 inch wheelbases, the Clipper was restyled in 1948 with an envelope-styled body that many likened to an upside-down bathtub. The lack of a senior car further diminished Packard's luster - it was now perceived as just another car in the market and sales began a long decline.
Studebaker was the first manufacturer to offer an all-new postwar car in the Raymond Loewy-designed Champion. It was powered by updated versions of the pre-war sixes, with a choice of 80bhp 170 cubic-inch units.
The Champion's rounded, streamlined front and rear with equal length hood and trunk combined with a wraparound back window raised the question, "Is it coming or going?" It stuck as a nickname. Still, with its 6-passenger seating, relatively compact dimensions of 193 inch overall length, and three body styles (2-door, 4-door and convertible), the Champion proved quite popular. The only other established maker to offer a new body in this period was Hudson, which converted quickly to the smooth-sided "envelope" body style in its 1948 models.
These Hudson's used unit body construction, combining both body and chassis frame in a single piece. A further innovation was the "step down" design of the floor. Rather than having the floor level with the top of the frame rails that formed the door sills, Hudson lowered the floor pan to the bottom of the integrated frame rail providing "step down" access into the vehicle.
