Rain Gear
What's appropriate rain gear for Europe?

So this is a pretty silly question, but I am going to be studying abroad in Denmark and traveling around Europe for about 5 months and heard that it can be quite rainy in autumn there. I'd like to bring the appropriate rain gear, but I live in the dessert now and limited experience with rain. I feel like a lot of young Americans wear rain boots, and the flashier the better. Do people in Europe (esp. Scandinavia) really wear rain boots? If I wear them, will I get weird looks? If they don't wear rain boots, what would appropriate footwear look like?

Also, what is the official voltage for Denmark? Is it 220V or 230V??

It depends. Will you be spending a lot of time outdoors for hiking, fishing or hunting? Then, I would advise you to invest in some good gear and wait to buy it until you come here. There are Scandinavian producers of quality gear that's been especially made for the weather here (Helly Hansen, Fjällräven etc.)

If it's just for regular use, any rain gear will do. A few will wear colourful and funky rubber boots as a fashion statement, but most adults rarely wear rain boots (unless you're fishing, working in the garden etc.) but rather waterproof shoes or boots (gore tex treated etc.).

During rainy weather, I actually only wear my rain gear if I'm out with the dog, cycling or going for hikes. If I'm in the city shopping or visiting friends etc. I just wear my regular clothes and shoes maybe get a bit wet.

Umbrellas are pretty useless in Denmark because of the wind, but are very practical in most of Europe for city trips.

If you'll be staying for winter, my suggestion is that you buy your winter coat and boots here. It will be more expensive, but I know of many expats who bought their winter gear back home to save money only to discover that it was unsuited for a Danish winter.

Official voltage is 230V.
