What was the most painful, worst, weirdest, and hardest day/race on a bike?
Had a flat 3 times. Had to find a ride back. The second flat I was able to patch up. But the next one ripped my tire. Turned out there was a tube recall.....Great. A 9mile trip. I happened to get a ride from my friend who owned a Mini Cooper.....You don't wana know how I got my bike in there even when take out the wheels etc....
So what was your most worst day you had on a bike?
MIne without a doubt was when I was hit by a car.
A group of 4 of us were riding legally across OSU campus. A VW Beetle turned right at an intersection where we were proceeding straight. I was the lead rider and the bug's rear bumper clipped my front wheel. I went sprawling into the middle of the intersection. Back when this happened there were no clipless pedals. The cleats back then were made of soft white metal and mounted on the bottom of leather shoes by a cobbler. They had a slot that the platform pedal edge fit into and you had toe clips/straps cinched over your shoes locking you on the pedal. I laid there as my pals chased the offending driver. The light turned green for the cross traffic. I was still trying to get off the bike and out of harms way. Can you believe it? The other motorists -- instead of offering help or showing any concern that someone was down -- began blaring their horns for me to get out of the way. One idiot even gunning his engine as if to threaten to run me over.
Obviously I got out of the way, was ok and am here now. I was just lucky that I didn't hit the pavement with my head. There were no bike helmets other than the leather over steel hair nets of the day.
Yeah, that was a bad day.
