Is it fair to assume that lower overhead=lower prices myth has been debunked?
Free marketers always defended off shoring as a means of lower prices; meaning no pain felt by the stagnation of wages because costs would fall in tandem. However as the past two decades have demonstrated that reduced overhead does not cause prices to fall, but rather to go up! Consider the case of Nike when it off shored; the prices of a pair of Nike's stayed the same but company profits surged. When profits surge does do the market indexes which spurs greater speculation and...wait for it...higher prices.
We saw this in the middle of the 2000's when prices spiked while more and more jobs went overseas. We see it today as markets have slumped due to weak speculating that prices have fallen so much as to actually cause deflation!
So can we fairly assume that the myth of lower overhead=lower prices has been owned? And rather that the opposite holds true?
It's never fair to make assumptions.
Compare Blockbuster with Netflix, let us know what you find. Blockbuster cost more and provided less, Netflix costs less and provides more. Why? Because of lower overhead.... no need to buy property and stock shelves. Most content can be delivered over the internet.
