Motorcycle Gear
What exactly engages power to the rear wheel after shifting a motorcycle into gear?

When I go to shift my bike from rest into gear, nothing actually happens. Even when the clutch is disengaged, i can still shift down into first and no power transfers. I can be in 1st gear (or any gear) with my clutch released, and no action happens. It is just like i am in neutral, or have my clutch engaged. What is the problem? Is there a piece in the shift shaft broken? is it my clutch?
My bike is a 2000 yamaha r6. It is in fantastic condition other than this problem.

Ryan here is what you do.....Tell us what kind of a bike it is and how many cc's and what year because.....there are several different types of clutch engagement and dis-engagement systems each maker has their own style...Edit;on the crank there is a gear-- that gear is connected to the gear on the backside of the clutch basket-which is connected by way of a splined shaft-splined shaft turns and with gearing that is attached to it--turns the gears that are connected to the output shaft. Now after some thought, did you try to adjust the slack in the lever--if you have the cable to tight with no free play that will not allow the clutch to fully engage thus displaying the exact symptoms that you mentioned
