Is it possible to cross over into set designer/theatre design after training as an architect?
as in having studied architecture as an undergraduate degree.
It depends on your temperament. Set design in theatre uses *similar* concepts, but there's a lot of differences. For instance, you have to account for safety, you have to build sets in a way in which they can be taken down and passed through doors, you have to consider lighting design (sets and lighting need to complement), etc etc.
If you haven't done theatre set design before, I *highly* recommend testing yourself out with your local amateur group. You simply can't walk into professional set design without any prior experience in theatre, even with an architectural degree.
As an example, I worked with someone who did interior design in houses and then came to do her first ever set design role. She didn't understand basic concepts of theatre, like entrances and exits, safety, rigging/flying of sets, and other things. It's difficult, as someone who's worked and trained in theatre production, to collaborate with such a person because you feel as though they shouldn't be doing the show.
So do go and work with some amateur groups before getting too enthusiastic, you may find it's not to your liking or too different. But yes, it's possible if you have some basic theatre training.
