Has anyone wore motorcross body armor for street riding or am I being silly?
not sure if this is overkill or not. It looks like a mesh shirt, but it has elbow, forearm, back, chest, and a kidney belt. I already have a leather joe rocket blaster jacket, but the DD foam doesnt seem very safe. i wanted to take it out and wear this upper body armor instead. So thank you for reading
me, i was looking the icon knee protectors. They dont have velcro straps, but instead you put them on like a pair of jean or socks. They just slip on and have a stretchy material that form fits. A little high, maybe $60,but i worry about that too
Motocross gear is made to take a different type of hit than road gear.
MX protection is designed to deflect roost and offer impact protection from rocks and other pointy and painful objects. Top crash speeds on an MX bike are maybe 70mph, but usually occur at much slower speeds - below 30mph. So the foam is denser, and more resistant to punctures, but will transfer high-speed hits to the body.
Street protection is designed for high speed sliding impacts. The dual-density foam compresses in stages when hit, and doesn't transfer shock to the body - using the stages to absorb impact and displace it.
Also, street armor usually has more protection for the spine and tailbone.
I guess it depends on the type of riding you're doing. If it's regular street riding, the regular street protection should be better. If it's some street, some dirt and some in-between, maybe the MX crash protection with your abrasion protection on top.
The thing is, companies who make this stuff spend a bunch of money on testing. I'd rather just go with what's made for my application than try and second guess the manufacturers.
In regards to the knee protectors - don't your riding pants have these already?
